DIY Dry Shampoo

Why DIY dry shampoo? So you can get all the benefits of dry shampoo without the unwanted ingredients, wasteful packaging, or high price tags! Plus, you can customize this recipe with organic essential oils depending on your hair needs. Dry shampoo saves time, extends the lifespan of styled hair, and comes to the rescue when you need a quick refresh. Unfortunately, many commercial dry shampoo brands contain chemicals that can be harmful to people and the planet. They often also come in aerosol cans that are difficult to properly recycle. Research also suggests that spraying aerosol cans may contribute to air pollution! If you think it’s time to upgrade your dry shampoo to a clean, natural, and eco-friendly product, check out this DIY recipe!

How to Make DIY Dry Shampoo

You’d be surprised how easy it is to make your own dry shampoo!

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons arrowroot powder
  • 1 teaspoon – 2 tablespoons cocoa powder or activated charcoal (or a mix of each), depending on your hair color (you can omit entirely if you have very light blonde or white hair)
  • 10 drops essential oils
  • Optional: cinnamon powder (for red-toned hair)

Directions:

Mix all ingredients in a bowl, adding the cocoa powder and/or activated charcoal little by little until you achieve the desired color. If you have a reddish hair tone, add in cinnamon powder as needed.

Store in an airtight container – upcycled jars work great! To use, apply a minimal amount of your dry shampoo to your scalp with a clean makeup brush. Remember, a little goes a long way! Work into the roots of your hair with the makeup brush or your fingers. Brush through if desired. Style as normal.
