Which Essential Oils to Use for Headaches

Peppermint

Peppermint – peppermint naturally contains menthol, which relaxes muscles to help alleviate pain. Peppermint essential oil is said to relieve discomfort from both tension headaches and migraines. Make sure to dilute peppermint before applying to your skin. 

How to use peppermint essential oil for headaches: Mix with a carrier oil (such as coconut, jojoba, or sweet almond) and massage into your forehead, temples, shoulders, or wherever you’re feeling tension. 

Rosemary

Rosemary – the anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties of rosemary essential oil make it great for headache relief! Rosemary essential oil is also believed to contribute to stress reduction and better circulation, which can help both prevent and ease headaches. 

How to use rosemary essential oil for headaches: Mix with a carrier oil and massage into your forehead, temples, or wherever you’re feeling pressure. It’s also believed that simply smelling rosemary can relieve headaches, so you might want to diffuse rosemary in addition to applying topically. 

Lavender

Lavender – lavender is believed to help relieve symptoms of both stress headaches and migraines. Lavender helps you relax, which can help you get rid of a headache. A study showed that inhaling lavender essential oil for just 15 minutes can significantly reduce pain and other symptoms of migraine headaches.

Diffuse lavender essential oil to help prevent and relieve symptoms of headaches. If you’re suffering from a headache, you can also simply open a bottle of lavender essential oil and breathe in. Repeat as needed. You can also try taking a warm bath with 10-15 drops of lavender added to the bathwater. 

Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus – if your headache is caused by sinus congestion, eucalyptus is an excellent way to help relieve sinus pressure and ease sinus headaches.
