The Importance of Education

The Importance of Education

We live in a world where over 750 million adults cannot read or write, and two-thirds of those illiterate adults are women. Many people cannot even read a street sign or sign their name on an application. These barriers inform their entire existence and increase their vulnerability to exploitation, physical abuse, sexual violence, and poverty.

In India, there are approximately 287 million illiterate adults. This is the largest illiterate population in the world  amounts to 37% of the global total. 47.78% out of school children in India are girls. India is ranked at 123 out of 135 countries in female literacy rate.

In the United States, it is estimated that one in five adults (20%) is illiterate or possesses low literacy skills. This translates into 43.0 million people.

All communities are vulnerable to human trafficking, and education is the great tool for preventing it. Education saves lives both by spreading awareness and understanding and ensuring people have essential life skills to find sustainable, dignified employment.
