In our age of information overload and digital distraction, an intentional practice of mindfulness is more important than ever. But while the benefits of mindfulness are well documented, it can be difficult to change our habits and create new practices.
Mindfulness is defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as "a mental state achieved by focusing one's awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one's feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations, used as a therapeutic technique." It is the antidote to the stressed-out, time-crunched, adrenaline-saturated, caffeine-fueled lives many of us lead.
Being intentional about focusing on the present moment can increase our general wellness. It is interesting to note that the word moment can also mean "something of importance" and is derived from a Latin term meaning "movement". Mindfulness moments can move us toward what's important. But how to cultivate those moments? Here are three tips:
Prepare Your Schedule
Be intentional about identifying the time of day, whether it's five minutes or fifty, that you set apart and protect from the demands of the day.
Prepare Your Environment
Choose the place you will go, remove devices and other digital distractions, prioritize someplace that helps you relax (whether a dark room with a candle or a sunlit spot with plenty of plants), and consider incorporating aromatherapy like lavender essential oil or unique blends like Savhera's organic essential oil blends such as Tracy's Grace, our calming blend, or Secret Zest, our happy blend.
Prepare Yourself
Let others know you're not to be disturbed, breathe deeply, and focus on gratitude while not disturbing yourself with the lists, demands, and worries you've just set aside!
Savhera is a Hindi word meaning "new beginning," and our global community is always here to support you in your wellness journey and practice of mindfulness. You might want to check out our meditations book, Diffusing Dignity, for things to contemplate as you create space to be mindful.
