Sustainable DIY Foot Scrub

image of someone massaging their feet with a natural homemade foot scrub

Not only is this DIY foot scrub sustainable, it’s extremely cost-effective because it allows you to reuse a household ingredient! Instead of the sugar or salt found in many DIY foot scrub recipes, this foot scrub recipe calls for recycled coffee grounds. You can simply reuse coffee grounds from your morning brew! If you’re not a coffee drinker, feel free to substitute the recycled coffee for Epsom salt, sugar, or any other exfoliating ingredient you have on hand! And of course, you can always use fresh coffee grounds if you want!

Before we get to the recipe, a few notes on wellness!

Here’s Why We Love This DIY Foot Scrub

This foot scrub recipe uses coffee and a blend of essential oils. Coffee is an antioxidant-rich natural exfoliator! Plus, some research indicates that applying coffee to your skin can help with sunspots, fine lines, and inflammation. This recipe is a great way to reduce waste and recycle your used coffee grounds! Just remove coffee grounds from your coffee maker, and let them air dry on a baking sheet before adding to your scrub!

Orange essential oil helps encourage skin cell regeneration, brightens complexion, moisturizes, cleanses, and detoxifies! It has a bright, cheerful aroma that is uplifting and great for applying in either the morning or the evening. Orange is one of our favorite essential oils to add to DIY skincare and body products!

Peppermint essential oil relaxes muscles, relieves tension, cools aching joints, and energizes! After a long day on your feet, there’s nothing like peppermint to refresh, re-energize, and restore! Peppermint is the perfect ingredient for your daily self-care foot massage!

Frankincense is grounding and calming and has anti-inflammatory properties. It can help strengthen the skin while defending against bacteria and blemishes. If you have blisters or sore spots on your feet, frankincense essential oil can help soothe and relax your feet.

How to Make DIY Foot Scrub

  • 1 cup coffee grounds (if reusing grounds after brewing coffee, just let the grounds dry on a cookie sheet before adding to your scrub)
  • ½ cup coconut oil or shea butter (optional)
  • 7 drops orange essential oil
  • 5 drops peppermint essential oil
  • 5 drops frankincense essential oil

Mix together all the ingredients and add to an airtight container. When ready to use, massage the scrub into your feet for several minutes and then rinse off. Follow with your favorite moisturizer. For an extra soothing treatment, add a few drops of lavender essential oil to your moisturizer. Lavender will help calm and restore your feet after exfoliating.
